The results of TripAdvisor’s 2014 Travellers’ Choice Awards have been released and London hotels, as well as London itself, have made a strong showing. London was named most popular destination in the UK and the third best liked in the world, beaten only by Istanbul and Rome.
The city’s hotels certainly have their fans too, with eight of the best hotels in the UK based in the capital. In particular, the Red Carnation Hotel collection of properties appears frequently on the lists – whether competing with other hotels in the UK, the whole of Europe or worldwide, a Red Carnation hotel seems to always make the top 25.
The Milestone came out on top in the Best Hotels category, not only nabbing the number one position for the UK, but also ranking at number four for Europe and gaining the accolade of the 15th best hotel in the world. Two more Red Carnation Hotels made it into the top 25 – the Chesterfield Mayfair and the Montague on the Gardens.

The group’s reputation for top-notch service hasn’t gone unnoticed either.
The Milestone again made the list of Hotels with Exceptional Service, but it was Egerton House Hotel that was considered to have the best service of any UK hotel. The latter was number six in the same category for Europe and also made it into the top 25 hotels for service worldwide. Egerton House also featured as one of the best small hotels in the UK.
Other London hotels were featured too, though again no group got quite as much attention as Red Carnation Hotels. Hotel 41 was commended for exceptional service and also named one of the best small hotels. The other London hotels were all on the Best Hotels list, missing out on the Small Hotel and Excellent Service awards. The Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences, The Soho Hotel, Haymarket Hotel, the Corinthia and South Place Hotel were all well liked by TripAdvisor reviewers.
In previous years, London hotels were scarce on the UK Best Hotels list – not a single one of them made the grade in 2010 or 2011 and just three managed it in 2012. Eight London hotels in 2014, three from the same group, is a vast improvement. Perhaps we’ll see London hotels continue to assert themselves as establishments to be reckoned with.
